External Practices (Degree in Veterinary Medicine)

The student must carry out practices in each of the 4 blocks and must choose 2 entire blocks to be evaluated in each subject.

A.- HCV TRAVELING CLINIC BLOCK (25 hours, beware! both semesters!). MANDATORY!.

The student will come to carry out practices in the Mobile Clinic Services of the Veterinary Clinical Hospital. To do this, you must choose a group of practices in Academic. The scheduled departures are:

• 2 equine clinic outings
• 1 exit to the exploitation of Porcine cattle
• 2 outings to ruminant farms (mainly Bovine)

They should keep in mind that these practices are carried out throughout the year and are programmed in Academic only in PECA I, but the student must choose in which subject they want to be evaluated (PECA I or PECA II), regardless of the semester in which they did the practices.

B.- HCV EMERGENCY BLOCK (90 hours, mind you, both semesters). BOTH SEMESTERS REQUIRED!.

The student attends the HCV during emergency hours. To be able to choose a shift, the Academic application is used.

• B1. EXTERNAL INTERNSHIP AND MOBILE CLINIC I (FIRST SEMESTER)
  • 1 weekend night shift (F, Sat or Sun) from 9:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.
  • 2 night shifts during the week (to choose from Monday to Thursday) from 9:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the first semester.
  • 1 weekend morning shift (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • 1 weekend afternoon shift (Saturday or Sunday) from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
• B2. EXTERNAL INTERNSHIP AND MOBILE CLINIC II (SECOND SEMESTER)
  • 1 weekend night shift (F, Sat or Sun) from 9:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.
  • 2 night shifts during the week (to choose from Monday to Thursday) from 9:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the second semester.
  • 1 weekend morning shift (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • 1 weekend afternoon shift (Saturday or Sunday) from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The student must have signed the attendance sheet for these shifts and the objectives signed in the e-portfolio.

C.- SLAUGHTERHOUSE BLOCK (25 hours).  MANDATORY!.

He The student will attend practices at the Gran Canaria Island Slaughterhouse in the morning for 5 consecutive days. You must choose group in Academic.

BEWARE! YOU CAN ONLY CHOOSE A GROUP IN ONE OF THE SUBJECTS IN ACADEMIC PECA I OR PECA II.

D.- COMPANIES BLOCK OPTIONAL, choose D1 or D2!.

• D1.- PRIVATE VETERINARY CLINICS (100 HOURS)

The student can go to practices with any registered veterinarian in the Canary Islands and who carries out his activity in any veterinary establishment throughout the Canary Islands. Since 2010 the ULPGC has signed a Agreement with the two Veterinary Colleges of the Canary Islands, so that all the veterinarians registered in both schools can welcome our students. You must contact a registered veterinarian and request to be admitted to carry out external practices with him/her in private Veterinary Clinics.

• Las Palmas Veterinary Clinics (Consult).
• Veterinary Clinics of S/C de Tenerife (Consult).

Also, outside the agreement you can go to any other veterinary establishment, for example:

• Veterinary Clinic of the Parrot park (Tenerife)
• Fauna Recovery Center GREFA (Madrid)
• land nature (Murcia and Benidorm)
• Bañaderos Hostel (Gran Canaria)
• Center Hospitalier Vétérinaire Frégis (Arcueli, France)
• Palmitos Park 

In the event that the veterinarian is not registered in the Canary Islands, you will not be able to take advantage of the Agreement of the Associations and you must request the signing of a new agreement using the document that is linked to the right. All agreements will tend to be updated, so do not hesitate to request a specific agreement with the company or professional with whom you intend to do your internship, you just have to fill in the document (see right icon).

As long as the learning objectives established in the e-portfolio for the Private Veterinary Clinic are covered (you could complete them in other subjects), the student can also complete this block of practices (D1) attending any clinical activity with other veterinarians, veterinary establishments or companies with clinical activity outside the Canary Islands, but as long as they have signed an agreement with the ULPGC.

They must keep in mind that these practices can be carried out throughout the year, but the student must choose in which subject they want to be evaluated (I or II), regardless of the semester in which they did the practices.

D2.- FOOD SECTOR (100 HOURS)

The student can attend internships in companies in the food sector. Due to the learning objectives and the need to write a final report of these practices, students are advised to go to Food Industries or Consulting Companies of the Sector; although you can also go to public institutions with competences in hygiene, inspection and food control (Public Health inspectors, collective canteens, etc.). He will preferably go to companies that have a veterinarian on staff. In the case of not having a veterinarian, the student may carry out the internship under the supervision of a technician with the aforementioned skills and who will act as a company tutor.

They must keep in mind that these practices can be carried out throughout the year, but the student must choose in which subject they want to be evaluated (I or II), regardless of the semester in which they did the practices.

Each student will be assigned 1 unique ULPGC tutor for each subject.

ULPGC Tutor Assignment. The Faculty Center Practices Commission assigns the UPGC tutors, from among the professors who teach the subject as stated in the teaching projects, a tutor to each student (the assignment will be made in alphabetical order by last name).

The Commission has delegated the assignment of the tutors to the Dean's Office and it is done in strict order of receipt of credentials and assignment according to the teaching load of the teaching staff.

When you send your credential request, you must leave the ULPGC tutor field blank.

The ULPGC tutor who has touched you will appear on the credential sent to you from the Dean's Office.

Each student must contact a professional (preferably a veterinarian) to carry out internships in companies. Once the student has a commitment of dates and times, they can request the credential.

Each student will receive a credential for the external company (food sector or private clinic). The credential will include the tutor assignment of that company as well as the ULPGC Tutor

Obtaining the credential.  The student must request the credential and the assignment of the company tutor through the document that you will find on the right margin of this website and send it by email to miguel.batista@ulpgc.es After signing the document, you will receive it in pdf by email.

The ULPGC tutor will be in charge of evaluating the student following the evaluation criteria and sources detailed in the teaching project and will send the final grade to the subject coordinator. To facilitate the activity of the tutors, an evaluation sheet has been prepared and you can find it on the right side of this page.

Once the tutor has completed this sheet, it must be delivered to the subject coordinator so that it can be kept as evidence of the student's evaluation.

Evaluation procedure

The student will request an interview with the ULPGC tutor (assigned teacher) to be evaluated in one of the subjects (I or II) by appointment. In this interview, the activities carried out and the acquisition of knowledge will be assessed globally, represents the 10% of the final grade.

The student will make available to the ULPGC tutor during the interview exclusively:

• The document "Final memory of practices» . ONLY FOR BLOCK D.
• the e-portfolio try to have everything evaluated because the qualification comes out automatically and they are summative evaluations.
• Report of the company tutor, in a sealed envelope (see right margin). ONLY FOR BLOCK D.

The ULPGC tutor will calculate the grade for the subjects following the provisions of the teaching project.

The student must appear at the Insular Slaughterhouse at 7:30 in the morning, dressed in street clothes and bring the following clothing and personal hygiene equipment:

1 clean white coat (It's cold first thing in the pens and you have to put it on over your pajamas).

2 clean pajamas (1 obligatory green for the dirty area of the slaughterhouse and 1 obligatory maroon/purple for the clean area of the slaughterhouse).

1 Clean white rubber boots

1 Cloth and white cap. For people with long hair, it should be a net.

Personal utensils for shower. The shower is required after the working day according to regulations for the fight against epizootics. It is prohibited to enter the premises of the slaughterhouse with pendants, piercings, earrings, bracelets, etc. Mobile phones will not be used during practices except for a justified reason. Photographs may be taken under the supervision and permission of the Veterinarians. Failure to comply with these instructions will not allow entry to practice. If there is a lack of interest or disturbances in the normal development of the work, the student will be expelled from the practice with the consequent failure in the subject.

How to get there by public transport: Transporte Global, at the bus station in San Telmo Park (bus line no. 12 Las Palmas-Telde-Las Palmas, departure time from 6:00, every half hour at half past the hour). Departure from the Las Palmas bus station. Arrival at mercalaspalmas stop. Duration about 20 minutes, inside the mercalaspalmas, the slaughterhouse is located at the entrance on the left hand side in front of the Texaco gas station.)

How to get there by private vehicle:

a) By the ring road, take the ring road, airport-south direction, and when you get to the water treatment plant, take the deviation that indicates mercalaspalmas. At the following roundabouts, always follow the direction of Marzagán-Mercalaspalmas-Jinámar. Continue for 1 km (or less) and enter the "mercalaspalmas" sign. Within mercalaspalmas, the slaughterhouse is located at the entrance, on the left hand side (high up), in front of the Texaco gas station.

b) By highway from Las Palmas: take the highway (GC-1) toward the airport-south, pass the Adolfo Cañas tunnel. Right at the exit of this tunnel, go past the entrance on the right that goes to "hoya del parral-marfea" (not this way), continue along the lane to the right, and at the height of the water treatment plant (there is an ITV sign), that same lane diverts you to the right, passing under a bridge-road. At the following roundabouts, always follow the direction “marzagán-mercalaspalmas-jinámar”. Continue for 1 km (or less) and enter the "mercalaspalmas" sign. Within "mercalaspalmas", the slaughterhouse is located at the entrance, on the left (high), in front of the Texaco gas station.

ULPGC Civil Liability Policy 

The ULPGC has a civil liability policy for external practices.

Regarding external internships abroad, said policy covers all countries except the US and Canada, and has a sub-limit of €150,555 per claim. 

In the event of an accident at the Collaborating Entity during the internship period, as well as when traveling to the center where the internship is carried out and vice versa, the ULPGC will guarantee health care contingencies that will be covered by the School Insurance or Social Security Regime applicable to each student. If the internship is in a European Union country, the student must apply for the European Health Insurance Card before leaving. In addition, If the practices are in a country outside the European Union, the student is responsible for taking out their own insurance policy.
