The FVE Board, which meets several times a year to discuss current affairs and manage the day-to-day running of the organization, is made up of a president and four vice-presidents. The President and his Council are elected for two years and may be re-elected once.

The FVE aims to support veterinarians in the performance of their professional responsibilities. In addition to their high level of education and training, and through the application of their specific animal knowledge and acquired technical skills, veterinarians contribute in a unique way to the prevention and control of animal health and welfare problems. and its impact on human health. About 60 percent of all pathogens known to affect humans are zoonotic diseases. Veterinarians are therefore experts in the field of animal health, animal welfare and public health.

The FVE was founded in 1975 and represents 230,000 veterinarians from 46 national organizations and 38 European countries. Its work agenda currently contemplates the study, discussion and contributions to four veterinary regulations prepared by the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission: the European animal health regulation, the regulation on official veterinary controls, the regulation on veterinary medicines and the regulation on medicated feed.
